GURU MAHIMA - 02 JULY 2012
We all chant Guru mantra every time before bhajans.
"Om Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu Gurur Devo Mahesvarah, Gurur Saakshat Para Brahma Tasmai Shree Guru ve Namah"
This mantra is addressed to Guru which means 'salutations to the noble teacher who is
Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Shiva and who is the supreme Brahman'.
The Guru is like Lord Brahma because he creates the character in us.
The Guru is like Lord Vishnu because he protects the good qualities we have.
The Guru is like Lord Shiva because he destroys the bad habits and bad qualities we have.
Another famous verse known to maGuru Purnima is observed as the day for honoring the
Guru. The word 'Guru' is a Sanskrit word. 'Gu' means "darkness", 'ru' means
"removal". So the word 'Guru' means the one who illumines the intelligence and
removes ignorance that is obstructing the full development of his pupils.
But we may ask "Do we need a Guru in our life?"
In Shirdi Sai Sat-charita Shirdi Baba once gave a beautiful discourse in the Masjid regarding the necessity of a Guru, saying that a Guru is like a guide who will take us to our destination
He said, "The path through which one has to travel in life is like passing through a jungle where there are wolves, tigers and other wild animals in the form of desires, ego and pride and
huge mountains and deep ditches in the form of anger, passion, jealousy etc.
If we take a guide which is our Guru with us then there is no difficulty as he will
take us straight to our destination avoiding wolves, tigers, mountains and ditches".
Dear Brothers and Sisters, we have our Swami as our Guru. He has given us discourses as teachings for us to follow. His message as I understand it is one that prompts us to love and serve each other. He tells us that when we act with selfless love, we can bring heaven to earth. He inspires us to be instruments of a light that leads us out of the darkness. Swami will always be present in our hearts, dreams and thoughts and his vibrations will guide us forever.
For me there is no better guide than Him, who I believe to be the Lord of the universe.
Swami, You are my Guru, My Lord. And I will always love you.
