TRUTH - 05 MAR 2012

WE ARE ALL TAUGHT FROM YOUNG ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT BEING TRUTHFUL IS. BUT HOW MANY OF US TELL THE TRUTH ALL THE TIME ? I AM SURE WE HAVE ALL IN OUR LIVES AT ON POINT OR ANOTHER TOLD A LIE. THERE ARE CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE IF WE TELL THE TRUTH WE WILL HURT THE OTHER PERSON, SO WE TELL A LIE. WE AS KIDS TELL LIES TO OUR PARENTS TO AVOID BEING PUNISHED. BUT THAT IS NOT RIGHT. IF WE HAVE DONE WRONG, WE MUST BE PREPARED TO BE PUNISHED FOR IT AND NOT TELL A LIE TO AVOID IT BECAUSE AS WE ALREADY KNOW, IN THE LAW OF KARMA, WE WILL EVENTUALLY GET PUNISHED FOR OUR WRONG.

SO TODAY, I AM GOING TO share with you, a Story ABOUT how even GOD was not spared when he lied.

ONE DAY IN THE HEAVENS, BRAHMA AND VISHNU WERE HAVING A FIGHT ABOUT WHO WAS THE GREATEST. Brahma was so arrogant and proclaimed that since he is the creator, he is the best. He claimed that Lord Vishnu would not have anything whatsoever to preserve if he did not create anything. Lord Vishnu on the other hand did not accept this. WHEN THEY COULD NOT COME TO DECISION, THEY BROUGHT THIS TO SHIVA TO DECIDE. AFTER SOME THOUGHT, SHIVA TOLD THEM HIS PLAN. HE SAID whoever touches his jada, TOP OF HIS HEAD is the greatest. Having said that he TRANSFORMED HIMSELF INTO A VERY HUGE SHIVALINGAM. He grew bigger and bigger at such a rapid rate. BRAHMA turned INTO A SWAN. BRAHMA STARTED FLYING AROUND IN SEARCH OF SHIVA’S HEAD. WHILE BRAHMA WAS FLYING, A FLOWER FROM SHIVA’S HEAD WAS FALLING. BRAHMA CAUGHT IT AND TOLD THE FLOWER TO TELL everyone WHO ASKED THAT BRAHMA GOT THE FLOWER FROM THE TOP OF SHIVA’S HEAD and hence he would be the winner. IN THE MEANTIME VISHNU, knew that there is no way that he can catch up with lord shiva. He came up with a very clever yet humble idea. He decided to touch lord Shiva’s feet because when he touches the feet, Lord Shiva would bend down to help him up and he can quickly toch his hair. So he turned himself into a wildboar and started digging the ground. Just then Lord Shiva felt someone touch his feet and when he realized that it was Lord Vishnu, he was so astonished. He immediately bent down to help Lord Vishnu up and so as planned Lord Vishnu was announced as the winner. However, at this juncture Lord Brahma proclaimed that he had already touched his head and the flower was his witness. The flower confirmed what lord brahma said. Lord Shiva became bery angry for he knew that they were both lying.

HE CURSED THE FLOWER AND TOLD IT THAT since it lied it will no longer be used in any puja. That would serve as a punishment for it. As for Lord Brahma, as his punishment there will not be any temple for him.

FROM THIS STORY, WE HAVE LEARNT THAT even God is not spared for lying. If God Himself can be punished for lying, we are merely humans. WHAT EVER WE DO OR SAY, GOD IS WATCHING US AND WE SHOULD ALWAYS speak THE TRUTH NO MATTER WHAT. If the truth we say is going to hurt someone, then don’t say anything at all.

Our five basic human values are Satya, Dharma, Shanthi, Prema, and Ahimsa. Ie Truth, Right conduct, Peace, Love and Non-Violence. As Swami’s children, I think it is very important for all of us follow these values. Though it may be difficult at times, let us all persevere. Let us all commit that even the small little white lies are total unacceptable. Only then will Swami be happy with us. Though we may not aspire to touch his hair like Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, Let us all work towards capturing Swami in our hearts by practicing a simple yet challenging value - truth. Afterall Life is a challenge, lets meet it.
