SWAMI - THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF SEVA - 6 JUNE 2005
Sai Ram uncles, aunties, brothers and sisters. I am Sherwin from Group 4 and the
topic of my talk today is "Swami – The Perfect Example for Seva ".
Swami has done lots of seva ever since he was a young boy and we must all learn from our perfect Avatar. Seva means selfless service and by offering selfless service to mankind, we are in fact, serving God. As Swami has said, ‘Service to man is service to God’.
I would like to share with you two of Swami’s greatest seva projects.
The first one is the Water Project which brought water to more than 700 villages in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh (where Prashanthi Nilayam is located). This project cost about US $70 million. It was directed by the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust together with the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Swami made possible what others could not do for many years and that was to provide clean and hygienic drinking water to thousands of people who were suffering tremendously without any clean water to live their daily lives. Can you image how your life would be like if you did not have clean water in your life? I can assure you it would be miserable!
The second major seva project that Swami directed was the building of the Super Speciality Hospitals in both Prashanti Nilayam and in Bangalore. The Super Speciality Hospital was setup by the Sri Sathya Sai Medical Trust in 1991 to demonstrate that medical care of the highest quality even in highly specialised fields can be provided totally free of cost. The aim is to ensure that people who are unwell receive the best treatment, irrespective of their caste, creed, or social status.
Can you imagine the thousands of poor people who never had enough money to see a doctor to get help can now get the best medical care in India all because of Swami’s Divine Love. It is only because of Swami that young children who could not see now have vision, people with heart trouble can now live longer and many more. All due to our beloved Swami!
We must all remember that we are born to serve. I would like to end my talk with a quote from Swami. “Man should spend his life in sacred activities such as seva to the distressed, sick and underprivileged.’
